How to use the Journal

How to use the Journal

Journalling isn't the most glamorous part of trading, but it is one of the most vital elements and one that helps you to remain consistent. A Journal helps us to keep track of and reflect on our previous trades, and this keeps us accountable.

That's why it's one of our 3 Master Keys of Trading - the other two being Stock Selection (Big Money Footprints) and Market Timing.

If you'd like more information about the EDGE trading plan, you can find an explanation of what it is here.

As with our other how to guides, we've put together a tutorial video that you can follow along with and reference at any time.

How do I get to the Journal?

There are three places via which you can access your Journal.

  • Journal Admin area
You can access this from the left-hand sidebar. Here you can add, edit and delete existing Trade Plans and Notes. You can also use the 'i' icon to see more information about the Journal.

  • 'Add Journal'
You can use the 'Add Journal' button above the Charts to add a Trade Plan or Note.

  • Journal Viewer
In the right-hand sidebar, you'll be able to view your Journal Entries alongside your Charts.

How do I add a Trade Plan?

You can easily add a Trade Plan or Note directly from the Charts by using the 'Add Journal' button.

Click 'Add Journal' and then select 'Add Trade Plan' as shown below.

From here you'll enter the following:

  • Setup Date
When is this setup forming (typically the day you're adding the Trade Plan or a few days prior)

  • Action
Whether you're choosing to go Long (Buy) or Short (Sell) on the stock

  • Entry Level
The price at which you would enter the trade

  • Initial Stop
Where you would place your initial Stop Loss when placing the trade

  • P1 Exit, P2 Exit
Your profit targets, in the form of the stock price. Think of this as the price at which you would theoretically exit the trade. Enter at least a P1, P2 is optional.

  • Stock Selection (Big Money Footprints)
Which Big Money Footprints are you seeing on the chart that makes this a viable trade?

  • Market Timing
Make notes on the Short, Medium and Long Term Market Timing. Prior to looking for a trade, you would have looked at OVI Markets Daily so that you know what the Market Timers are signalling.

  • Additional Notes
Insert any additional notes that you think are relevant to this trade - i.e. Is Earnings coming up soon? Are there any news events around this stock? Was there anything you particularly like about

Once you've completed these, click 'Save'.

How do I edit or delete my Journal Entries?

You can edit and delete your Journal Entries via the Journal Admin area in the left-hand sidebar.

Click on the Journal Admin area, select the stock that has your Journal Entry and click the three dots on the Trade Plan Entry. From here you can select 'Edit Entry' or 'Delete Entry'.

When you are deleting an Entry, a warning will pop up to make sure that you want to delete the Trade Plan or Note. If you do, you can click 'Yes' and this will then be deleted.

That covers what you need to know to get started with the Journal!
If you'd like a more in-depth explanation of the features, you can find these in the Journal User Guide here.
